ASIC says it is yet to serve GetSwift directors Joel Macdonald, Bane Hunter

Wants to get things moving Judge Michael Lee remarked that ASIC’s investigation has “received a tad of publicity” over the past year. If ASIC wins the case, Mr Hunter and Mr Macdonald could be banned from managing a corporation for a period of time to be determined by the court. The pair and GetSwift could also face a fine and a court declaration that they broke the law. Judge Lee told GetSwift’s lawyers, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, they have less than a week to get instructions from Mr Macdonald and Mr Hunter. A firm trial date is still to come, but Judge Lee made it clear that he wants to get things moving. GetSwift and Mr Macdonald, who was managing director at the time of the alleged contraventions, are also staring down three shareholder class actions , the first of which is set down for trial in October. Judge Lee suggested the ASIC case and first class action, brought by law firm Phi Finney McDonald, should be run concurrently given the overlap in allegations.

Elon Musk just sent this memo to employees about the cheaper Model 3 and store closures

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday sent an email to employees explaining the company’s decision to reduce its headcount in its sales and marketing divisions, according to a copy of the memo that was sent to CNBC. News of the upcoming layoffs come as Tesla announced that sales of the $35,000 Model 3 were finally available, adding that all sales of Tesla vehicles would be moving exclusively online . As part of the announcement, Musk also warned that the company would not turn a profit in the first quarter, sending Tesla’s share price down more than 3 percent Thursday night. Last month, I noted in my email that the fundamental issue Tesla must overcome is that our products remain too expensive for most people. We know there are many people who want to buy Model 3, but simply can’t afford to do so. That is why we’re excited to announce today that we are now offering the standard Model 3 at $35,000. This is a significant milestone for Tesla, the culmination of years of hard work by empl

The Jonas Brothers release new song ‘Sucker’ along with video starring their lovebugs

The JoBros are back with a little help from their favorite lovebugs. The reunited band of brothers — Nick Jonas , 26,  Joe Jonas , 29, and  Kevin Jonas , 31 — released “Sucker,” their first new track in nearly six years, at midnight Friday. The track was accompanied by a music video featuring Kevin ,  Joe , and  Nick ‘s respective love interests: Danielle Jonas ,  Priyanka Chopra , and  Sophie Turner. In the tune, which celebrates their individual relationships, the brothers sing, “I’m a sucker for you/Say the word and I’d go anywhere blindly.” The video, meanwhile, features the bandmates and their lady friends exploring an Alice in Wonderland- inspired castle landscape dressed in elaborate costumes. On Thursday, Joe Jonas sent Jonas Brothers’ diehard fans into a tizzy with a tweet confirming new music from the band is on the way. Six years after they originally split, the brothers are making their long-time rumored reunion official. Joe’s tweet included a link the boys’ new si

David Harbour saves the world in devilishly fun new Hellboy trailer

Image
WARNING: TRAILER CONTAINS EXPLICIT LANGUAGE Are you ready for the apocalypse? David Harbour certainly is. The Stranger Things actor stars in the new Hellboy movie as the demon hero who’s made a home on Earth and now strives to protect it from monsters like himself. As seen in the newest, R-rated trailer for the film above, there’s a lot to protect it from! As Harbour told EW when the first trailer dropped back in December, the movie’s main question is whether Hellboy belongs more with his demonic brethren or with the humans who raised him. The former faction is represented by Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich), who Hellboy senses a strange kind of kinship with. The latter is represented by Hellboy’s human adoptive father, Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane) and the BPRD organization he leads. In case any viewers want to catch up on Hellboy comics before the movie lands in April, Dark Horse just published comprehensive new omnibus editions . One of them in particular, Hellbo

As Luka Doncic Turns 20, NBA Marvels at Runaway Rookie of the Year

Image
Eric Christian Smith/Associated Press LOS ANGELES — With Dirk Nowitzki celebrating an unofficial farewell tour in his 21st NBA season, the Dallas Mavericks are starting anew with one of the best young international players in the world. Luka Doncic   was named the NBA’s Western Conference Rookie of the Month for November, December and January. He’s the runaway favorite for Rookie of the Year, too. “He’s at a high level of no f–ks given when he plays basketball,”  Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers said.  “It’s fun to watch.” Doncic, who turns 20 on Thursday, is averaging 20.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists during his first year with the Mavericks. “He’s really an all-around package on the offensive end, whether it’s the shot, drives, floaters, the passes,” Nowitzki said. “He’s a big guard, he can see over some of those traps [teams are] throwing at him. His basketball IQ is out of this world for 19. … He’ll be fun to watch for Mavs fans for a very long time.” The Mav

Legacies recap: A mummy invades spring break

One very strong sign about an ensemble show is that no matter which characters are on the screen, it works. And with each week, Legacies has tried different groupings, and as odd as this week’s seemed at first — Ric, Dorian, Emma, Kaleb, Hope, Lizzie, and Josie — it absolutely worked, which goes to show that this show has established such interesting characters on their own, the grouping doesn’t really matter. We start with spring break at the Salvatore School! Only, it’s the worst kind of spring break you could imagine because it involves plagues! First up, Dorian and Emma share a beetle-infested picnic and then Alaric, who’s been losing ever his mind since he threw the urn over a bridge, does some research and realizes that mini-plagues have been happening all over. Even worse? They’re a harbinger of what’s to come … A MUMMY!! But we’ll get to that. First, Dorian and Emma abandon their romantic mountain getaway to help Ric and the girls with the mummy, for which Ric also enlists

How to Get Away With Murder recap: We’re all living in hell now

Here we are, the How to Get Away With Murder season finale — finding ourselves very much in the same place we’ve been finding ourselves for about two years now — in a mess of Jorge Castillo’s making. Last week, we learned that the slimy lawyer who met with Nate Lahey, Sr. in prison was not, in fact, Emmett Crawford, but Laurel’s brother — Javier Castillo, who is basically Jorge 2.0. We see a flashback of this meeting where Javier tries to convince Nate Sr. they can get him a better trial date, but Nate sees through him and tells him to get his ass out that door. God, I miss this man. Laurel sees the footage and is convinced her father is orchestrating this all from prison. But Annalise turns on Laurel, telling her that Nate’s father and Wes are both dead because of her. Annalise fires shots at Frank too, blaming Laurel’s internship on his penis. And she’s not wrong. They’re all living in hell now and she’s tired of it. Something tells me Annalise’s personal hell won’t end until thi

The Most Overrated Players in 2019 NFL Free Agency

Image
0 of 10 Don Juan Moore/Getty Images Free agency should — and often does—resemble the stock market.  You want to buy what you believe to be rising and part ways with or avoid what you think is declining. But when free-agent signing season kicks off March 13, a lot of teams will make the mistake of investing in plummeting or toxic assets. Teams should think twice before breaking the bank for the following 10 players, all of whom are projected to hit the open market and have been the subject of oodles of hype but possess various red flags.      1 of 10 Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles might be the most accomplished signal-caller to hit the open market in March, but there’s reason to wonder if the 30-year-old can suddenly experience sustained success for the first time in his NFL career.  Somebody will likely pay Foles a comical amount of money because he’s a “winner” who helped lead the Eagles on a shocking championship run in

A Million Little Things recap: The Barbara Morgan mystery is revealed

Guys, we made it! It’s the A Million Little Things first season finale and all the mysteries are about to be answered. So let’s get right into it, eh? We kick things off with Maggie moving into Gary’s place. The plan is Eddie will move into her old apartment to make room. (I’m telling you, Eddie has the best deal; her place is sweet.) Maggie is reluctant to unpack or build any furniture until she gets the all clear from her doctor. Gary’s is optimistic and, thankfully(!!), he has good reason to be. When they get to the doctor’s office later, he tells them Maggie is in remission! Woo! Maggie laughs uncontrollably as Gary cries, but later at home, she really lets the news sink in as she unpacks her boxes at Gary’s place. She never thought she’d survive this time. Before all this, the gang gathers at Delilah’s place. The Dixon family has been packing up Jon’s belongings and decided to give certain items out to the group. Gary gets his old Harvard shirt; Gina gets Jon’s first real es

A Million Little Things creator breaks down season finale, Jon’s big secret

Well, we didn’t see that coming. After a season of questions revolving around Jon’s (Ron Livingston) suicide — who is Barbara Morgan? what was Jon’s devastating secret — the season 1 finale of A Million Little Things answered them all, while also setting up further intrigue to come. Drea de Matteo’s mysterious character is the infamous Barbara, and she solves the Jon mystery for us and Delilah (Stephanie Szostak). Barbara was the pregnant girlfriend of Jon’s college roommate Dave, and she reveals that Dave and Jon were going on a trip together when Jon just missed the flight. It turns out that this was on Sept. 11, 2001, and the flight was American Airlines Flight 11, which never made it to Los Angeles because it was hijacked and flown into the first of the Twin Towers. Jon and Barbara would meet outside the gate for Dave’s next birthday, when she told him that she was engaged to Mitch (Rhys Coiro), who will raise her son to be his own. And back in 2019, we learn that the son is Ro

A pivotal Star Trek: Discovery spotlights Captain Pike and complicates Spock’s history

“Light and Shadows” is both a very good episode of Star Trek: Discovery and a very disappointing episode of Star Trek: Discovery . The good stuff first, because we’re overdue for a longer discussion about one of season 2’s best surprises: Anson Mount has turned Disco ’s version of Captain Pike into a charmingly deadpan commander, nobly unfazed in the face of cosmic calamity. In “Light and Shadows,” Pike’s got a problem. Tyler (Shazad Latif) won’t leave him alone. Section 31’s local spy keeps trying to bigfoot the Discovery commander, flashing his death-metal Starfleet badge. “The chair outranks the badge,” Pike tells the secret Klingon, tossing the spy insignia in the air like he’s flipping an unwanted coin. Pike has his doubts about Tyler. After all, this man killed a Discovery crew member. Is he a man at all? Voq still simmers therein. “There’s no way to get rid of him,” Tyler says. Cue Pike’s eyeroll: “I know the feeling.” Pike and Tyler get paired up on a snazzy flying missi

The A-list actresses of Tyler Perry movies

Behold, the many A-listers who have graced Tyler Perry’s movies with their presence. The director, producer, writer, and actor may be best known in pop culture for his  Madea  franchise (the latest of which, A Madea Family Funeral , hits theaters March 1), but it would be prudent not to leave out his hits that don’t center around the sassy granny.  Up first: the inimitable Thandie Newton. In 2010 she joined the powerhouse ensemble cast of  For Colored Girls , which was based on the haunting stage play (and poem). In 2012 Newton starred opposite Perry in  Good Deeds  — he was the rich businessman whose life was decided for him, she was a cleaning woman in his building, and no, it was nothing like  Maid in Manhattan . HBO boss Richard Plepler wanted more autonomy at AT&T, and his departure is an ominous sign

AT&T spent more than $85 billion to acquire Time Warner and its crown jewel, HBO. finally gave up its pursuit to block the deal, HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler is resigning. According to people familiar with the matter, this is an issue of autonomy. Plepler wanted to run HBO, and new WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey, an AT&T veteran, was effectively running HBO. Plepler had ideas about technology and international expansion that didn’t jibe with Stankey’s vision, according to a person familiar with the matter. The two are also “different people” and didn’t have the closest relationship, another person said. So after six years of running HBO autonomously, Plepler told Stankey earlier this month he wanted to leave, two of the people said. Plepler hasn’t decided where he will go next, though he’ll only entertain jobs where he has leadership autonomy, the people said. He is expected to stay at HBO for at least two more weeks, the people said. Leadership changes are common in acquisiti

Weezer, Jimmy Fallon, and the Roots take on ‘Take On Me’ with classroom instruments

Fresh off a barbershop quartet rendition of their song “Buddy Holly,” Weezer are already returning to  The Tonight Show to put a new spin on another tune. But now, frontman Rivers Cuomo looks less like Buddy Holly and a lot more like Morten Harket. In an exclusive preview of the latest “Classroom Instruments” segment (a classic Jimmy Fallon bit), the  Tonight Show host and the Roots join Weezer (Cuomo, guitarist Brian Bell, bassist Scott Shriner, and drummer Patrick Wilson) for a performance of A-Ha’s iconic hit “Take On Me.” Cuomo handles lead vocals, meaning he gets to take on the song’s notorious high note. (You know, the one you always try to hit when you’re alone in your car and this song comes on the radio…) Befitting the material, everyone’s decked out in painfully ’80s regalia. The segment also spoofs the famous music video for the song, flitting between live action and the sketchy, hand-drawn look of the music video. It’s enough to take you back to 1984… or it would be

90210 stars and fellow celebs express support for Luke Perry after reported stroke

The Beverly Hills,   90210 gang and other celebrities turned to social media on Thursday to express support for Luke Perry, who is in the hospital after a reported stroke . Actors like Ian Ziering called for his followers to “say a prayer” for Perry, 52, whose representative said is “currently under observation at the hospital.” He did not give other details on his condition. Besides his much-beloved role as Dylan on the long-running 90210, Perry also guest stars as Archie’s dad on the CW’s Riverdale . Perry was taken to the hospital on the same day that  Fox revealed it would air a 90210  limited series that will premiere this summer. Perry was not part of the announcement, but producers are leaving the door open for him and Shannen Doherty to join the six-episode series. Former 90210 stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling have all signed on to the project. How to decode the spin in reporting season

Record underlying earnings We’ve put a boat load of crap below the line as “significant items” so our bonuses aren’t affected. Trust us, this is the number to watch. No, really. Record statutory earnings Yes, we’ve said for a decade that underlying profit is the true measure of our business. But those numbers looked awful, and we flogged some property, so just look at this statutory number, will you? It was a resilient result in the circumstances You knew it was going to be bad, and it is. Earnings will be skewed to the second half We are praying that we can save our bonuses in the next four-and-a-half months. Our momentum has continued It’s another poor result, but at least it’s better than last year. We’re becoming a more customer-focused business Our fees were so high I wouldn’t let my own mother become a client. Weather impacted our results We’re not really sure what happened to sales, but it rained a fair bit. We’ll go with that. We are transforming the customer exp

Transit is a haunting refugee thriller that blurs the past and present: EW review

The past becomes an eerie prophecy for the present in German director Christian Petzold’s haunting new existentialist thriller, Transit . Based on a 1944 novel by Anna Seghers that chronicled the harrowing purgatory of being stateless and dispossessed during wartime, Petzold’s mysterious waking nightmare of a film telegraphs its parallels to the current global refugee crisis by shifting the film’s setting to now — or at least a time that looks and feels like a funhouse-mirror version of now. The movie opens in France, where the wail of police sirens is a constant background drone and civilians are routinely rounded up by heavily armed police officers. We’re told, through fearful, whispered conversations, that “the fascists” are rolling in and anyone without the proper transit papers will be shipped off to camps, or worse. One of these doomed souls on the run is Georg (Franz Rogowski) — an everyman straight out of a Kafka story who speaks in lisping German and has the face of a bruis
