The Enemy Within stars on why the NBC drama isn’t your typical network procedural
The Enemy Within may air on NBC, but don’t tune in expecting your typical network procedural. EW recently caught up with stars Jennifer Carpenter and Morris Chestnut at SCAD aTVfest in Atlanta, and both agreed that the show poses tough questions without guiding viewers to easy conclusions.
“It’s not often on a network show where the lines are sort of blurred,” Carpenter says. “This isn’t a black-and-white show. We’re not telling you how to feel at the end of every episode.”
“It’s a character-driven show. It’s not a case-of-the-week show,” Chestnut adds. “It really feels like a cable show on network.”
The Enemy Within follows CIA operative Erica Shepherd (Carpenter), who is blackmailed into betraying American agents in order to save her daughter. Years later, while serving a life prison sentence for her actions, she is recruited by FBI agent Will Keaton (Chestnut) to help stop the same terrorist who blackmailed her.
“If you choose to make it an introspective experience, then one week you may be empathizing with him and the next you may see my point of view and come to my side,” Carpenter says. “And that’s part of the fun of it, I think.”
